Newport

Newport is often viewed (to the consternation of Cincinnati city officials) as Cincinnati's leading entertainment district. Right across the Ohio River and walking distance from both Downtown and Covington, this neighborhood offers an incredible array of dining, shopping and nightlife options. The modernity of new developments, such as the shopping district along the river is nicely balanced with the preservation of historic buildings, such as those in the East Row. Dining

Newport has dining options to satisfy almost any whim, from home-style family diners like Ann’s Ice Balls and Pepper Pod to authentic Mexican at Rio Grande and sushi at Aoi Japanese Cuisine. For a local favorite, Newport also sports two independent chili parlors, Dixie Chili and Gourmet Chili. One of the area’s most popular pizza and pasta joints, Pompilio’s, is also known around the world as the location of a pivotal scene in the movie Rain Man. From ethnic cuisine to familiar pub grub, from four-star dining to economic carry-outs, no matter that one might be in the mood for food-wise, Newport can most likely provide it.
Nightlife

For many, Newport = Nightlife. Diversion comes in many forms in Newport, from movies at the AMC to upscale entertaining at The Newport Syndicate. Kids of all ages can play video games and ski ball at Game Works (they switch to 18+ only after 11 p.m.). For bowling, head to Walt’s Center Lanes. York Street Café and The Historic Southgate House both book live music on a regular basis, and Funny Bone Comedy Club features both local and national acts. If a cold, stout beer is the goal, one can’t do much better than Hofbrauhaus, which brews its own award-winning beers from old recipes crafted for German royalty … and also features a full dinner menu and beer garden. Arnie’s on the Levee is a popular college hangout, while Captain Cove’s serves a local crowd. For an Irish pub feel, there’s Claddaugh Irish Pub; and with economy drink specials and $2 orders of tater-tots, Bar Louie aims to please.
Arts & Entertainment

Newport works to support and promote its artists. Every first Friday of the month, the city hosts WAAM night, which stands for Writers, Actors, Artists and Musicians. During this night of the month, many participating shops and artistic venues stay open late and feature art, music or theatre of some kind. Some of the participants include Gallerie Zaum, Seventh Street Gifts, Mammoth Café, Stained Glass Theatre, Monmouth Theatre, The Historic Southgate House and Steamboat Bagels, among others. During the rest of the month, one can attend full theatrical productions at Monmouth Theatre and Stained Glass Theatre, as well as live music concerts at The Historic Southgate House. Those that enjoy cabaret can take in original shows at Shadowbox Cabaret. For a good, old-fashioned flick, AMC has 20 theatres showing the latest blockbusters. Every now and then, the city puts on big festivals, such as the annual Monmouth Art and Jazz Festival.
Recreation

Besides a gorgeous river walk that leads from near the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge to Covington and a walk across the Purple People Bridge to downtown Cincinnati, there are about a dozen parks in Newport where one can get a little exercise or relax with a book. The city organizes both adult and child softball teams, and more programs are available at Ralph Mussman Recreation Complex. Those who enjoy martial arts can try out Fry’s Taekwondo Family.
Special Interest

There are a couple less-conventional ways to spend your time in Newport. One can rent a horse and buggy for a spin around the neighborhood … or hop aboard an all-terrain giant duck! These amphibious vehicles tour around Newport on land, then hop into the water for a river tour. When the romance stage has passed and it’s time to tie the knot, Newport Syndicate is one of the area’s leading reception halls, with banquet rooms that can accommodate 12-650 guests.
Shopping

Like dining and nightlife, Newport has a wide variety in its shopping offerings, from standard chain stores like Barnes & Noble to independent specialty shops. Newport on the Levee boasts a number of shopping options, including outdoor kiosks in the courtyard that open during the summer to sell both traditional and somewhat more bizarre products - like hermit crabs.

One of the most colorful specialty shops is Sin City Antique Gallery, which provides not only a fun browsing experience, but a quick history lesson as well. Shabby Euro Chic is another eclectic boutique, featuring painted vintage furniture, Paris imports, garden décor, chandeliers and old linens. Another great little trinket shop is Seventh Street Gifts, offering everything from cards and art work to jewelry and aromatherapy oils.

There are lots of ways to keep fit and looking nice in Newport. Fitworks and Fusion Studio both offer classes in spinning, cardio and strength/personal training, while Kula Center for Movement teaches yoga, dance and qigong. For hair care, there’s The Monroe on East 10th, which offers haircuts and styling, as well as several barbers and quick-cuts: The Barber of Monmouth, Great Clips, Super Cuts and Plaza Barbers. For nails, there’s X-nails. Chiropractic services are provided by Ehn Family Chiropractic and Corder Chiropractic. For pet care: Melody Manor Dog Grooming and Wags-n-Whiskers Pet Grooming.
