Sharonville

At only about 15 minutes from Downtown, Sharonville captures both the density of the city and the tranquility of a suburb. These contrasts are melded by an active, community-minded local government and dozens of small, specialty businesses and ethnic eateries. One of Northwest Hamilton County's older, more established suburbs, Sharonville is in the process of reinventing itself as a family fun destination spot. The history is still apparent, however, in Sharonville's quaint downtown area (with its new "Depot Square" theme), where one can sip a coffee, visit an art gallery or enjoy a café-style meal.

Second Look

Sharonville, known as the "city of progress," features a great mix of the old and new. First settled in 1788 and incorporated in 1962, this small city stretches across 11 square miles into the southern tip of Butler County. The population of 14,000 rises to about 37,000 during the day, due to an influx of workers supporting the wide variety of businesses in Sharonville - there are more than 20 hotels, 50 restaurants and 1,200 businesses, ranging from family-run shops to major corporate and manufacturing companies, such as Ford Motor Co. and United Parcel Service.

Sharonville is working to present itself as a destination spot for families and special events, with its new CoCo Keys Water Resort and Hotel and the Sharonville Convention Center, which hosts private and public events year-round. It is also an attractive place to live, with a mix of moderately-priced housing, more expensive subdivisions and apartment complexes (about 20 percent of the housing is comprised of rental units).

Families are drawn by the Princeton School District, which has a great reputation (Princeton High School is one of the only schools in Ohio to offer International Baccalaureate classes in addition to Advanced Placement courses). Sharonville also boasts lots of recreational offerings, including two community and aquatic centers, 17 ball fields and five parks. Sharon Woods is one of Greater Cincinnati's park gems, containing over 700 acres of trails, a lake, golf course and Heritage Village, a living history museum depicting life in the 19th century.

Centrally located from Downtown Cincinnati, just minutes from Interstates 75, 71 and 275 and the Ronald Reagan Highway, Sharonville is a hub for family-friendly entertainment as well as a popular place to live and work.

  There are plenty of dining options in Sharonville, ranging from fast food to casual and fine dining. One really unique venue, only open during the warm season, is the Root Beer Stand, which, true to its name, serves delicious home made root beer as well as burgers, hot dogs and fries. Other casual favorites are Angilo's Pizza and the family friendly Chuck E. Cheese. For excellent barbeque, fried green tomatoes and other Southern treats, one can't do much better than Burbank's Real Bar-B-Q. El Rancho Grande features great traditional Mexican food, while Sabor Peruano serves Peruvian delights and Athenian specializes in Greek fare. When in the mood for something slightly exotic, there are several Indian and other Asian eateries in the area, including New Krishna, Aangan Restaurant and Chinese Imperial Inn. More upscale dining can be found at La Petite France (specializing in classic French cuisine) and Vincenzo's Italian Restaurant. When it's time for dessert, Alreddy Coffee and Café provides espressos and teas.

  Sharonville has a couple of great live music venues. Burbank's Real Bar-B-Q features a Blues jam session with Sonny Moorman every Thursday night, as well as some of the city's best Blues bands on Friday and Saturday nights. Rhino's Bar & Grill is an even larger live music club, featuring bigger bands in all genres, from Salsa to R&B to Rock. There are also a few neighborhood bars worth checking out. Blue Goose Sports Café is a great place to catch a Sunday afternoon football game, and Al's Bar does pool and karaoke. For more serious pool enthusiasts, there's BK Billiards, and for a stiff or more formal drink, the Sheraton Cincinnati North Hotel features a nice lounge. If popcorn and a flick are more the mood, the latest blockbusters are always showing at Springdale Cinema.

  The newly-renovated Sharonville Fine Arts Center is set to be the heart of arts and culture in Sharonville. The site consists of five main features: the Art Gallery, Artist's Studios, Art Education Center, Live Performance Theatre and Outdoor Children's Sculpture Garden. Currently, the gallery is open, and shows a wide range of art, from children's and student's art exhibits to regional, national and international artist shows. Studio space rental are now available to artists, and theatre groups may rent the theatre for rehearsals or productions. The Tri-County Players, a theatre troupe formed more than 40 years ago, have their home base there and produce new shows every two-three months. For arts education opportunities, the Sharonville Community Center offers dance, arts and crafts classes, mostly for children, but also for adults.
• Recreation
  

  The only challenge to recreation in Sharonville is deciding what to do. The city boasts 17 ball fields, four golf courses, five tennis courts, two community centers with pools, five parks and much more! The Sharonville Community and Aquatic center and Queen City Racquet and Fitness Club both offer year-round fitness classes and a place to work out. For the more adventurous, the Rockquest Climbing Center offers climbing classes and equipment and Park's Tae Kwon Do teaches fitness via hard core martial arts. Sharon Woods Park offers top-notch golfing, bike and pedal boat rentals, and acres of walking trails and playgrounds, as well as the Heritage Village Museum. Those who enjoy ice skating should visit Northland Ice Center, while those who prefer water parks will want to visit CoCo Keys Water Resort and Hotel - unlike other similar water parks, this indoor water resort does not require a stay in their hotel to take advantage of the heated water park. For those who like to do it all, the Evendale Sports Plus Center offers ice hockey, basketball and old-fashioned arcade games.
• Special Interest
  

  The Sharonville Convention Center, a 28,000 square-foot facility, is the nexus for any special interest, and hosts an eclectic variety of events, from bridal shows and jewelry expos to gun shows and psychic fairs. In 2009, they will expand to include a 20,000 square-foot exhibition hall and a 15,000 square-foot ballroom that will open into the hall for a total of 35,000 square feet of space, as well as an additional 11,000 square feet of meeting space (divisible into seven rooms). It is - in a word - huge, and is always featuring some type of interesting expo.

  Jungle Jim's International Market, though technically in neighboring Fairfield, is close enough (and magnificent enough) to deserve mention here. One might compare it to the Noah's Ark of food - just about any type of international cooking ingredient can be found here. This gargantuan grocery is divided into smaller sections, representing different corners of the world as well as the expected divisions of produce, cheese, bread, seafood and meat. They also host regular beer and wine tastings, cooking classes and samples on the weekends - it's the one supermarket where you just may want to shop hungry. Next to the grocery store is the Oscar Event Center (where Jungle Jim's often holds its wine, beer and cigar tastings), a full-service event center with multiple rooms. The opulent, glamorous facilities are also available for rent for banquets, meetings, receptions, performances and events of all kinds.
• Shopping
  

  There are a multitude of shopping opportunties in Sharonville, with many shopping plazas, a major mall, and a host of unique, independent businesses.

  For health food shopping, there is Complete Nutrition Center, while exotic international ingredients can be found at Niva Grocers and Bombay Grocers, Inc. For arts, crafts and framing needs, one can visit Art and Soul Framing, Frame and Art and Bourne to Paint. Any computer part or accessory imaginable is available at Micro Center. Those looking for a bargain should definitely check out Gabriel Brothers, a discount department store that sells high end clothes and personal and home accessories at wallet-friendly prices.

  It is also important to note that Sharonville is home to the second-largest mall in Cincinnati, Tri-County Mall, which contains more than 125 shops as well as a 50,000 square-foot indoor theme park featuring amusement rides, an indoor go-kart track, bowling, miniature golf, activity areas for children and a huge arcade. Sharonville is also only four miles away from Cincinnati's largest mall, Cincinnati Mills (with 1.5 million leaseable square feet) and 12 miles away from Cincinnati's third largest mall, Kenwood Towne Centre (with 1.2 million leasable square feet).

  Looking good is a snap in Sharonville. Whether working on a tan, looking for the perfect "do," or just in need of an old-school barber, Sharonville has it. Those in search of a deal can find one at the Cincinnati School of Barbering and Hair Design, where students will provide a selection of beauty services for an affordable price. For economical fitness classes, the Sharonville Recreation Center has much to offer.
